Finishing up Beowulf
I liked reading Beowulf too. I agree it was a little hard to follow at times but I just took the time to read it slowly and thoroughly. As I finished Beowulf tonight I found the dragon to be a poignant symbol of that "wyrd" concept that we talked about. The whole tone of the final battle of Beowulf and the dragon is very depressing and full of doom. It was almost like Beowulf didn't really have a chance against this dragon, which was kind of sad. The dragon really portrayed Beowulf's end to his life and the powerful life he lead. The part of the end that kind of confused me was the whole concept of the guarded treasure? What did this imply? The first thing I thought of was in Harry Potter the 3 headed dog that guards the door (sorry, that's not very relevant). But I just couldn't really figure out the meaning of the hidden treasure. Was it symbolizing that through Beowulf's death good things were in store for his people? Or that the unfolding of the treasure showed how full and great Beowulf's life was? Any thoughts? :)
