Hypocrisy?
I think it is interesting that Donne, who is most known for his Holy Sonnets and lines such as "Death, be not proud," and "Batter my heart, three-personed God" (Sonnets 10 and 14) with lines that are usually interpreted to be Christian meaningful poetry also wrote poems such as "The Flea" which has an abundance of sexual references. What intrigues me even more is the similarity between the two styles of poems with lines such as "three lives in one flea" from "The Flea" and the Trinitarian references such as "three-personed God" in Holy Sonnet 14. Is Donne using Biblical/Christian ideas in the sexual symbols of "The Flea" or is he mocking God in the Holy Sonnets? Either way, his poetry makes me think about my belief structure whether he shared my beliefs or not.
