Inquistion Extra Credit
The lecture on the inquisition in Mexico was very confusing to me at times but over all it had a great connection to what we were talking about in Brit. Lit during that week. The lecturer did a lot of extensive research on her topic, but she did a poor job of introducing it which confused me the most. The overall theme that I took out of the lecture was that the Jewish culture was being persecuted by the catholic culture in Mexico. This led to a inquisition where people of the Jewish faith were killed publicly for what they believed in. It also caused a rift between generations of Jewish people. Soon the younger generations were turning in the older generations to the inquisition. While this persecution took place in Mexico, there was also similar religious persecution in England during the reigns of Mary I and Elizabeth I. During Mary's reign the protestants were being persecuted by the Catholics, which was shown through the literature of the time. Then Elizabeth I came to the throne and the protestants started persecuting the Catholics. This can be seen through literature like Dr. Faustus. There are many examples of the catholic faith being made fun of and seen as a religion that spawn from the devil.
